Marietta Kesting

forscht und lehrt derzeit am Institut für Künste und Medien der Universität Potsdam. Sie war von 2016 bis August 2022 Juniorprofessorin für Medientheorie am cx centrum für interdisziplinäre studien an der Akademie für Bildende Künste München. Sie studierte Visual Arts am Bennington College, Vermont (USA), und Kultur und Medienwissenschaft an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Neben ihren wissenschaftlichen Beiträgen produzierte sie auch Film- und Foto-Arbeiten (Film Sunny Land, Berlinale Forum 2010). Aus dieser Zeit stammt die Publikation Sun Tropes. Sun City and (Post-) Apartheid Culture in South Africa (August Verlag 2009). Seit 2004 ist sie Teil der kollektiven Publikationsplattform b_books in Berlin. Ihre Dissertation Affective Images of Post-Apartheid. Documentary Perspectives on Migration, Xenophobia and Gender in South African Film and Photography (2015) wurde von der DFG gefördert und für den Humboldt-Preis nominiert. Von 2014 bis 2016 war Kesting wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin im Exzellenzcluster Bild|Wissen|Gestaltung und arbeitete zur »Visualisierung des Grenzraums Europa«. Von 2015 bis 2018 war sie Post-Doc an der Universität für angewandte Kunst, Wien, im FWF-Projekt »A Matter of Historicity. Material Practices in Audiovisual Art«. Sie schreibt u.a. für Texte zur Kunst, Social Dynamics und fkw Zeitschrift für Geschlechterforschung und visuelle Kultur.

The ideal of the Western white Man as the universal representative of humanity has repeatedly been subject to critique. For several decades the Jamaican author and philosopher Sylvia Wynter – the book’s title refers to her formulation ‘Towards Human after Man’ – has advocated a decolonial concept of the human decoupled from its Western normalized and racialized configurations. Current neo-materialist, post-humanist or ecological discourses see the most pressing impetus for a rethinking of the human above all in climate change, mass extinction, the tightening fusion of the living and the technical and their associated mechanisms of capitalist exploitation. This book interrelates these different approaches and brings them into dialogue with artistic positions projecting alternative forms of the human in radical and sometimes highly speculative ways. The publication is the result of the seventh annual programme of the cx centre for interdisciplinary studies of the Academy of Fine Arts Munich.

With contributions by Morehshin Allahyari, Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Bracha L. Ettinger, Louisa Gagliardi, Maja Gunn, Luciana Parisi, Istvan Praet, Kathrin Thiele, Alexander G. Weheliye, Zairong Xiang and others.
