Roberta Ioli

Roberta Ioli is an Italian essayist, poet, and an independent researcher in ancient philosophy affiliated with the University of Bologna. She has an MPhil in Classics and holds a PhD in Philosophy. She has published extensively on the classical world, with particular focus on Greek epic, ancient skepticism, and Sophistic thought. Her books include Gorgia di Leontini: Su ciò che non è (Olms, 2010); Teocrito: L’Incantatrice e altri idilli (Ladolfi, 2012); Gorgia: Testimonianze e frammenti (Carocci,2013); and Il felice inganno: Poesia, finzione e verità nel mondo antico (Mimesis, 2018). She has also worked on the connections between ancient theater and vocality, collaborating with the Acusma Group at the Sapienza University of Rome and with La Triennale di Milano. Her dramaturgical work with the theater company Societas resulted in various essays exploring the relationship between body, voice, and the experience of mourning, including Vocem devorat dolor: Ecuba e la voce del lamento (Edizioni della Stoà, 2008). She is the author of the blog Il passato ci parla on Aula di Lettere (Zanichelli), where she reflects on the lasting influence and relevance of classical culture in contemporary society. Her poetry collections include L’atteso altrove (Pequod, 2014); Radice d’ombra (Pequod, 2016); Il confine dell’isola (LietoColle, 2018); and Fuochi alleati (Pequod, 2024).

“Follow the Water Follow the Sound” is a call and response. Far removed from the associations of seduction and fear that the siren — both as mythological figure and alarm device — has inspired, it is an invitation to another perceptual attunement to our environment. Offering an original perspective, the book imagines the “Sirenic” as a practice oriented towards emergent futures, fabulations of becoming and pedagogies of transformation.

The book engages with notions of singing, voicing and listening that reach into a sonic pluriverse. Through these notions, it provides the grounds for an expanded conception of cinema emerging through sound, music and performance.

Bringing together scholars, curators and artists from across disciplines, the book unfolds as a polyphonic publication. Echoing one another in multiple ways, the authors explore the mythologies and ecologies of water, the poetics and politics of voice, and the invocation of a communal spirit through film and other arts.
